the song that starts, i hate the world today, ran through my head a few days ago…
my thoughts, exactly.
i angry texted a friend.
she simply replied,
can you bless someone today?
might take your mind off of everything.
it should have been bedtime, so
we didn’t even take time to put on shoes.
i grabbed the camera and a sack full of chalk from the cabinet.
but momma, don’t we need shoes?
no, bubba. not this time. just barefoot.
i wanted to just sneak down
to burn some negative energy
and then sneak back upstairs to baths and bed.
a neighbor’s daughter walked out on her way to a friend’s house.
she paused when she saw me sitting in the middle of the road.
that looks like fun. i might tell my mom i’m staying here instead.
and the next time i looked up from my middle of the road seat,
the road was full of kids and color and scribbles and moms….
the kids were asking for more chalk as their fingers scraped against asphalt,
trying to make it (the chalk? the moment?) last.
and so we did. we made it last.
we played in the road today.
we encouraged others, reminded them that they’re loved.
and we reveled in community….
we made plans to gather more chalk.
and i don’t hate the world today* anymore…
